Mural, a New York payments infrastructure startup, raised a $15 million Series A led by Tether, bringing its total funding to $28 million, the company said Tuesday. North Island Ventures and existing investors also took part.

Mural provides accounts, payments, identity and compliance tools that fintechs and platforms use to build financial products for people and for AI agents acting on their behalf, according to the company's release. The platform runs across traditional banking networks and blockchains, and lets customers set transaction limits, restrict counterparties and require extra approvals for larger payments, CoinDesk reported. Named customers include payroll platform Deel, browser developer Opera and Axexo.

The company plans to use the money for international expansion and to build regulatory and payments infrastructure for what it calls agentic finance. The coverage does not specify which stablecoins or blockchains Mural supports.

The $15 million is the amount raised in this round; total funding of $28 million implies about $13 million was raised before it.

For Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, the investment fits a push into infrastructure beyond stablecoin issuance, CoinDesk reported, which described the deal as part of the company's move into agentic finance. The round is small by venture standards, but it shows where a major stablecoin issuer is putting capital: into the software businesses use to move and control money, rather than into the coins themselves.

Mural was founded in 2022 by former Palantir engineers and is a separate company from the visual-collaboration software firm of the same name.
